What is the Iliad and who wrote it?
The Iliad is an ancient Greek poem written by a man named Homer. Homer was the best poet of the ancient world, he also wrote another famous poem called the Odyssey. The Iliad means the story of Troy so this poem retells important and significant events that occurred during the last couple of months of the Trojan War, the 10 year siege that happened in the city of Troy, and it also describes in detail what it was like to live in those times. This poem was written in the last year of the Trojan War which was the mid-eighth century, around 3000 years ago. The Iliad is one of the longest poems ever written with 15,693 lines. It is also one of the most well- known poems of all time and is still remembered thousands of years later.
