Information on Troy
The city of Troy was built around 3000 B.C. and ruined in 500 A.D. Troy was an ancient city that was protected by big walls. It was built by the ancient Greeks and is located on the coast of Turkey in a village called Hissarlik, right across from the sea of Sparta. Troy had high 20 feet walls surrounding the city. There were gates in the wall to let people in and out but the walls were strategically designed to keep the people of Troy safe and protected.
At first Troy wasn’t known to be a factual city until 1868 when a German- American man named Henrich Schliemann started to look for Troy, he used the Iliad to help him find Troy. The Iliad is a poem written by an ancient Greek man named Homer, in the mid-eighth century which is around 3000 years ago. It retells important and significant situations that occurred during the last year of the Trojan War, the 10 year siege that happened in the city of troy and describes in detail what it was like to live in those times. The illiad is one of the most well-known poems of all time and is still important and remembered to this day.
The Trojan War is a conflict that happened between the Trojans and the Greeks. The conflict started when the prince of Troy, Paris abducted the Queen of Sparta, Helen who was the king of Sparta’s wife. When Melenaus who is the king of Sparta wanted Helen back, Paris refused so Melenaus sent his brother Aggemon to lead an army against Troy and that’s how the Trojan War started and the war carried on for ten long years.
The Greeks had been trying to enter the city of Troy for many years but never succeeded until a man named Odysseus who was a Greek general had an idea. Odysseus idea was to build a big and beautiful horse known as the Trojan horse, then leave it outside the gates of Troy. After putting the horse in place the Greeks would pretend to finally admit defeat letting the city of Troy think they won, then the Greeks would leave. What Troy didn’t know was that the horse would be hollow and there would be around 20 Greek soldiers hiding inside. When the Greeks had left the people of Troy came outside the gates cheering believing they had won, they found the large horse outside as well and they dragged the horse inside like the Greeks hoped they would. The city of Troy put the horse on display so they could gloat about it to everyone around them. That night, while the people of Troy were asleep the 20 Greek soldiers climbed out and opened the gates allowing the rest of the Greek army in. That night the Greeks finally won the year’s long conflict between the two cities and City of Troy was destroyed.
The city of Troy had a statue which was called the palladium or palladion. The Palladium is a statue that the safety of troy and later on Rome was said to depend on, they believed that their cities could not fall apart if they had this statue, they worshipped and took good care of the statue. During the Trojan War the Palladium was stolen from the people of Troy by two men named Diomedoes and Odysseus it was then taken and kept at the future site of Rome.
